Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) has announced that the highly anticipated smartphone game, “Dungeon and Fighter: Origin” developed by Korea's Nexon will be released on May 21. After seven years of work on mobile adaptation of one of the most profitable PC games ever “Dungeon and Fighter” played by more than 850 million players worldwide, “Dungeon and Fighter: Origin” is finally ready to debut on the Chinese and global markets. In a February note, investment bank Jefferies projected revenues in China of between $600 million and $1.1 billion in annualized revenue over time. Last month, Tencent conducted a series of tests with 300,000 players which produced excellent results in parameters such as [utenti attivi giornalieri]retention rate and propensity to pay of users.
The game has already been released in South Korea in 2022 and became an instant hit. But its release in China was delayed after the government cracked down on the gaming industry between 2018 and 2022. Tencent was indeed hit by a severe crisis in the gaming industry in 2021, when Chinese authorities introduced additional restrictions to limit children's screen time and fight addiction.
Approval of new titles was also suspended for almost a year, with the regulator only starting to issue new licenses in early 2023.
