The Murcian justice system these days is facing the farewell of another of its great figures –after the departure of Ascensión Martín–. This Monday, Judge Pilar Alonso signed the act of dismissal for her upon reaching the age of 72 – the maximum established by law – and after up to 42 years of career in the courts. She did so, surrounded by a large number of colleagues, before the president of the Superior Court of Justice (TSJ), Miguel Pascual del Riquelme, and Miguel Ángel Larrosa, president of the Provincial Court, a body in which she has served for the last few years. 29 years.
Born in Elche, Alonso has forged a renowned career over decades that began in 1976 as a district judge. Her professional interest took her to the courts of Lorca (1984-86), Albacete (1987-89) and Murcia, where in 1989 she assumed Court of First Instance number 3, until two years later she was appointed magistrate. of the Audience.
In 2010 he chose to preside over the Provincial Court – his colleague Andrés Pacheco won – and in 2015 he did the same with the presidency of the Superior Court of Justice (TSJ) of the Region.
The appointment to that position of Miguel Pasqual del Riquelme, her colleague in the Francisco de Vitoria Association, ignited the debate – although she never made a statement on the matter. A group of members of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) denounced that there had been “discrimination on the basis of sex” and even a “diversion of power”, recalling that Pilar Alonso was 1,160 positions above Pasqual del Riquelme in the rank and that his merits were difficult to refute. Alonso filed an appeal before the Supreme Court, which ended up beheading the TSJ by annulling, due to lack of motivation, the appointment of the president of the TSJ.
The court, however, ended up confirming the election of the current president of the regional justice. A month later, the Plenary of the CGPJ voted again for the presidency of the TSJ and Pasqual del Riquelme was elected again, this time with two more votes than on the previous occasion. The Supreme Court rejected a second appeal by Judge Alonso against the new appointment, indicating that there was no misuse of power, no arbitrariness, nor discrimination against women.
