Plot

Rome, 1943. In the midst of the Second World War, the shows of the Circus Mezzapiotta, owned by the Jew Israel, take place, in which four freaks perform: Matilde, a girl who produces electricity by electrocuting anyone who touches her; Cencio, an albino boy capable of controlling insects; Fulvio, a “beast man” suffering from hypertrichosis, entirely covered in hair and endowed with superhuman strength; Mario, a dwarf with slight mental retardation and the ability to control metal objects. The worsening of the conflict puts the survival of the circus at risk, so Israel proposes to the four that they attempt the journey to America; after collecting their savings, however, he disappears into thin air. Searching for him on the streets of the capital and fortunately escaping a Nazi raid, the four decide to separate: Matilde, the only one to believe in Israel's good faith, leaves to look for him, while the other three go to the prestigious Berlin Zircus, a sumptuous show put on by the Nazi occupiers.

Matilde escapes a rape attempt by a German soldier, and finds refuge with a down-at-heel group of partisans led by Gobbo, who is interested in her due to her power. During an ambush on a column of Nazi trucks, Matilde spots Israel with other deportees, but is unable to save him because she is unable to control her power, nor use it to harm anyone, afflicted by the remorse of having killed involuntarily his mother. Fulvio, Mario and Cencio are hired at the Berlin Zircus, which is actually the kingdom of Franz, a hexadactyl German pianist with clairvoyant powers. He predicts the death of the Nazi dictator and the arrival of four beings endowed with superhuman powers capable of saving the fate of the Third Reich. He created the Zircus with the aim of gathering all the freaks and subjecting them to torture, in order to identify the saviors.
