US President Joe Biden said in February this year that he will not let Chinese car companies 'flood the market with vehicles that could pose risks to our national security'. Dutch MPs Boswijk (CDA), Paternotte (D66) and Van Campen (VVD) have now also issued a similar warning. They ask the government to conduct research into electric cars and how they affect our safety. It could even lead to an area ban for EVs.
The three MPs see EVs as one of the 'most advanced consumer electronics' where a lot of data is collected and shared. According to the MPs, there are also 'many questions about cyber security aspects surrounding Chinese electric cars'. In addition, the behavior of the Chinese government also plays a role. Teslas in China are cited as an example. Tesla cars are allowed to drive and park in certain places in China and not in certain places. This measure was taken out of fear for national security. The Netherlands might want to bounce that ball back.
Based on the above arguments, the MPs request the government to conduct research into (Chinese) electric cars. When the House of Representatives discussed the motion voted, all 150 members voted in favor. That is why the government will soon conduct an analysis of the risks of electric cars for national security. This is not just about cars from China.
Possible area ban for EVs
If the researchers identify risks with EVs, the government wants to see possible measures proposed. Some possible options are discussed in the motion. For example, area bans can be imposed in the vicinity of 'military complexes, critical infrastructure and government buildings'. Sounds like a large part of the Netherlands. As soon as the research results are known, we will share them with you.
