The director of Life By You – future opponent of The Sims – says that life sim games are “i more complex role-playing and crafting games“never made.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Rod Humble – director of Life By You and manager of Paradox Interactive – explains why, in his opinion, life sims have had a surge in popularity in recent times.
“The reason why the life sim genre is so successful, and I believe it will become more and more successful, is that it is an inclusive game genre that anyone can use to tell stories that have roots in real life“the developer said.
It is explained that on a macroscopic level it is possible to “drag, demolish and reorganize entire cities” and, on a more granular level, one can decide what a certain character says to another character at a certain moment, writing a play (or a soap operaif you prefer) live.
“I think people who don't play life simulators maybe don't understand that these are also the most complex role-playing games ever writtenas well as being some of the most complex crafting games that have ever been made and as well as being some of the most complex behavioral AI systems that have ever been thought of,” Humble said. “But the reason I think they're so popular it's that even though they're so complex, they're relatable and you don't need a tutorial.”
The Sims challengers
While The Sims has been everyone's favorite life sim since the early 2000s, it will soon have a little more competition.
On the horizon is not only Paradox Interactive's Life By You, but also Alex Massé's Paralives scheduled for release next year.
The Sims will continue, but there will be more competition this time around.
