Alonso bewitched (again) by Aston Martin
The marriage between Fernando Alonso and the Aston Martin has definitively closed the door on one of the most evocative scenarios for the near future of Formula 1.
With the respect due to the Silverstone team, the idea of the Spaniard in a top-tier team like Red Bull would have had a completely different appeal, and the Mercedes route was also attractive. Alonso did not deny the interest of (and for) Red Bull and Mercedes, but preferred Aston Martin, thinking in the medium term. Decisive for the two-time world champion was the chance to work with Honda 11 years after that “GP2 engine” went down in history.
Alonso's words
“As I said last week, I think there's no reason to talk too much, because it's done now. I renewed with Aston Martin, and I would like to talk only about Aston. There were talks with everyoneas I think is normal for everyone right now, but it was just light conversations“, these were the words of the Spaniard at the press conference in Shanghai.
The two-time world champion identified the collaboration with Honda as the decisive factor for his stay in Aston Martin: “Honda is now winning the championship and is showing that it has the discipline and work needed to be successful in Formula 1. Obviously, with the new regulations, you never know what will happen, but we are extremely happy to be working with the Japanese. And being their only team I think makes a huge difference compared to the current situation“, has continued. “This is an advantage and is one of the reasons why I stayed in the new regulation and to have the opportunity to work with Honda again“.
