If it is true that Maserati was born on the track, there is no better place than a racetrack to put its latest models to the test. The opportunity was not long in arriving, with the Trident having returned to racing in the context of the Formula E championship two years ago. In conjunction with the Italian stage in Misano of the world championship for electric single-seaters, we tested on the track all the sporting capabilities of the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore.
Impressive acceleration
Leading us behind the wheel in Misano is Bruno Correia, driver of the Medical Car in Formula 1 and the Safety Car in Formula E. The Portuguese focuses on the 760 horsepower of the GranTurismo Folgore, but even more impressive are the 1350 Nm of torque, immediately available thanks to the promptness of the three electric motors. The sprint from the starting grid catches us unprepared, feeling the violent acceleration which shows no signs of abating until just before the braking section of Turn 1.
Once the initial impulse has passed, you almost forget that you are on board an electric car. Thanks to the acoustic modulation developed by Maserati, the low frequencies and other sound contributions extracted from the tradition of the Trident V8 resonate in the cabin. The Folgore's performance shows no sign of decreasing over the course of the lapdespite the high temperatures recorded in Romagna and the several tours already completed with the other guests of the Modena house.
Agile when cornering
Battery weight remains one of the main limiting factors for the performance of electric cars. However, GranTurismo Folgore compensates for the problem by exploiting the modularity of the powertrain. In fact, the three electric motors make it possible Torque Vectoring strategies, modulating the torque distribution not only between front and rear, but also between right and left side, improving rotation when changing direction. The result is a decidedly fun lap of the track, with the feeling at the finish line that it didn't last long enough.
