Honda's ambitions in 2026
After the currently sensational cycle with Red Bull, the Honda a challenge awaits that will be full of unknowns. In fact, the new power units for 2026 are just around the corner, which the Japanese will supply to Aston Martin, an ambitious team that has never won anything in Formula 1. Whether the combination will be successful is impossible to say until 2026, certainly at Silverstone we are working towards that season. And even at Honda they are not resting on their current successes, but are pursuing the new challenge.
Watanabe's words
Koji WatanabeHRC president, confirmed that Lawrence Stroll's thirst for success is fully embraced by the Japanese: “Our ambition is to become world champions from 2026 onwards. We know it will be very difficult, but we need big goals to do our best together with Aston Martin“, these are his words ad Autosport. “Together with Lawrence and Toshihiro Mibe (Honda president, ed.) we have set the goal of becoming champions in 2026. Stroll's passion and leadership and the money invested at Silverstone really impressed us: we made the decision to join them, when other teams had also contacted us to supply power units“.
The path, of course, is not easy, not even for those who have been in F1 (albeit not continuously) for 60 years: “Maybe we are still missing something. Aston Martin must say what we are missing and we must do the same with them. It's an honest conversation to become a top-tier team“.
The renewal with Alonso
Certainly the reassurances on Stroll and Honda's ambitions for 2026 also reached Fernando Alonso. Last week, in fact, the two-time world champion renewed his contract with Aston Martin until at least 2026. The Spaniard is chasing the title, and obtaining it at the age of 45 with the team he has courageously bet on in the summer of 2022 would be a historic feat.
