The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, revealed this Monday that his government is developing two alternative plans for the opening of the Paris Olympic Games, given the possibility of a terrorist attack. The ceremony was originally planned to take place along six kilometers along the Seine River on July 26. 10,500 athletes from all delegations will participate in the event, parading in turns in more than a hundred boats of all types and sizes.
However, France has been on high anti-terrorism alert since March, after a jihadist attack in an auditorium on the outskirts of Moscow. For the first time, alternative plans have been drawn up. «The ceremony we are planning is a world first. “We can do it and we are going to do it (…) But we have plans B and plans C and we prepare them in parallel,” Macron said in an interview with BFMTV television.
Alternative plans include a limited ceremony in the Place du Trocadero, where the ceremony was originally scheduled to end, near the Eiffel Tower. The other option is to return to the traditional format at the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, where athletics will be held.
The French president stressed that they are not facing the situation “naively”, but rather that they are fully “aware” of the threats that weigh on that ceremony. «We do not minimize the situation, the world is in disorder, we have a war in Europe (in Ukraine), we see what is happening in the Middle East, that there is a terrorist risk. But we are preparing to face it, with transparency,” said Macron.
The president emphasized that “it is worth the effort” to carry out all the preparations and ensure that the ceremony takes place along the Seine River. He stressed that the French authorities are working to guarantee security during the two weeks of the Olympic Games. The analysis is being carried out in “real time.”
