Starting this Monday, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena offers a new sustainable mobility platform for students, professors and administration staff to share their vehicle on their trips to the university. It is an application that connects drivers and passengers from the university community who make similar journeys.
According to traffic data managed by the Vice-Rector for Campus and Sustainability, 48% of students live outside Cartagena during the academic year and about 1,400 students use the car every day to go to university. “If we increase the number of shared trips, we will reduce both the emissions associated with mobility and the congestion of our parking lots,” said vice-rector Juan Pedro Solano.
Application operation
To share a vehicle you just have to download the 'Hoop Carpool' app, available on Google Play and the App Store, register with the phone number and validate the account with the university email. Once this is done, the new user can publish their route to find companions. The #UPCTShareCar initiative to promote car-sharing trips is presented as a sustainable mobility solution. “The intention is to reduce the carbon footprint associated with travel,” he added. Furthermore, he pointed out: “We try to contribute to reducing the pressure on the lack of parking spaces, to more economical transportation and to reinforce one of the means, which, along with public transportation, is used by the university community to come to Cartagena.”
