Acosta breaks Abe's record
A veteran. Pedro Acosta in perhaps one of the most difficult and demanding races on the calendar he bows only to Maverick Vinales and Aprilia, but takes the second consecutive podium in MotoGP and 20 very important points from a championship perspective. If on the eve of the GP of the Americas in the press conference Acosta had underlined that in Portugal he had not finished third, but fourth, because he was favored by the technical knockout of Vinales on the last lap, this time he cannot pull himself off the podium because at the limit you can think that Marc Marquez would have beaten him too, having crashed just a few corners after taking the lead by overtaking Acosta.
The GasGas driver chose the medium rear tire mindful of the difficulties in the Sprint with the soft and got off to a great start, immediately taking command of the operations. In doing so he updated the record for precociousness in terms of being in command of a race in the premier class of the world championship, a record held by the late Norifumi Abe (the two consecutive podiums in the top class are also a record at youth level). Acosta always responded blow for blow to his rivals' attacks, only giving up in front of Vinales. In the rear podium Acosta also had a small physical problem probably due to the fact that he drank very cold water perhaps too quickly and then in front of the cameras he showed calluses and blisters on his hands after a weekend of real rodeo.
“Today I had fun like a child – declared Pedro Acosta to the microphones of Sky Sports MotoGP – I haven't had this much fun with repeated overtaking since Moto3, I battled with Martin, with Marquez who then crashed, with Vinales, it was a fire race. Yesterday it was a disaster with the soft and therefore the medium tire seemed like an obvious choice because we didn't finish the race with the soft. I have to thank the team because they worked like crazy to allow us to experience a weekend like this, Dani Pedrosa and Pol Espargarò also do a fundamental job for us. The track where I can win? I really like Mugello and Phillip Island, but I don't want to make any appointments with victory because it would only bring extra pressure.”
