The first stage of a new adventure
Formula 1 officially presented today the calendar for the 2025 season: the first race of the season will return to Australia in Melbourne and has been scheduled for Sunday 16 March. That will also be the day – highly anticipated by all fans – of first GP as a Ferrari driver for Lewis Hamiltonafter a life spent challenging (and often beating) the reds of Maranello with the suits of McLaren and Mercedes.
From the cabal's point of view, however, this is not just any date in the career of the most successful driver in the history of F1. The Indeed, March 16 evokes bittersweet memories for Hamilton. Only twice in the past has F1 seen a GP take place on this date, always at the opening of the championship and always in Melbourne and in both cases Hamilton was the protagonist, positively and negatively.
A victory and a retirement
The first Grand Prix, in 2008, was won by the British, at the time representing McLaren, who climbed to the top step of the podium for the first time in his career in Australia, ahead of Nick Heidfeld and Nico Rosberg. To find the second, however, you have to go back to 2014. That day the era of hybrid F1 opened, with Hamilton preparing to contest his second championship as a Mercedes driver. Starting from pole position, his Australian GP lasted just two laps before ending due to engine failure. His teammate Rosberg won, opening the era of Mercedes triumphs.
At the end of the year always champion
In both 2008 and 2014, however, Hamilton ended the year as world champion, winning his first two career world titles: the only one with McLaren and the first with Mercedes. In 2025, again on March 16, the new adventure in red will begin. The dream, for Ferrari fans, is an outcome at the end of the season similar to that of the two previous ones mentioned.
