When an illegal act is carried out, sanctions are imposed which may vary depending on the act. These sanctions can range from a fine to imprisonment. For each crime, there are different penalties which can also be assessed based on the presence of certain aggravating circumstances. In the case of the murder of Sofia Castelli at the hands of her ex-boyfriend Zakaria Atqaoui, these aggravating circumstances were not found and the young man was sentenced to 24 years in prison.
Sofia Castelli twenty-year-old sociology student at the Bicocca University of Milan, was killed in 2023 by her ex-boyfriend. On the night between 28 and 29 July the young woman was at a disco with her friends and she didn't imagine that when she returned home to Cologno Monzesand, she would find her boyfriend hiding in the closet. When Sofia returns home at 6:00 in the morning, after a pleasant evening with her friends, she finds Zakaria Atqaoui in the closet.
The twenty-three-year-old armed with a knife takes Sofia's life with several stab wounds to the throat. Zakaria turned himself in to the police the same morning and declared that he had committed this act due to strong jealousy. Today, Friday 12 April, Zakaria Atqaoui was sentenced to serve 24 years in prisonAnd. The lawyers of Sofia Castelli's family had requested life imprisonment also due to the aggravating circumstances of premeditation, frivolous motives and cruelty.
The court recognized only the generic aggravating factors that prevailed over the three aggravating factors contested by the prosecution. Relatives and friends of Sofia Castelli, who were present at the hearing, burst into tears as soon as they heard the 24-year sentence. Sofia's best friend comments:
“He deserved a life sentence, in 24 years he will be around 50 years old, while Sofia will remain lifeless forever”
A sentence that makes neither Sofia's family nor her friends satisfied. Sofia's mother's lawyers are also against this sentence given that it contains significant aggravating circumstances.
