We all remember him playing cards with Bearzot and Dino Zoff, on board the plane that was taking the Azzurri back to Italy in the aftermath of the 1982 World Cup victory. Sandro Pertini was one of the most beloved Presidents of the Republic, for his personal history and for his spontaneity which made him unique as a man and as a politician. Now a piece of that character, his legendary red Fiat 500D, has been exhibited in the atrium of the Liguria Region headquarters in Genoa.
A beautiful tribute born from the initiative organized by the Legislative Assembly of Liguria and the Stati Generali del Patrimonio Italiano body which was part of the “Presidential Cities” program, a cultural, historical and tourist itinerary which has the patronage of Anci, the National Museum of the Automobile of Turin, the Sandro Pertini Association of Stella San Giovanni (Savona) and the Sandro Pertini Foundation of Florence.
After being shown last February 24th in Stella, Pertini's hometown, the Fiat 500 D registered in 1962, which is usually exhibited in the National Automobile Museum in Turin as a gift from his widow Carla Voltolina, arrived in the Liguria Region . “President Pertini's tour of the Cinquecento could not skip Genoa, and the regional headquarters in particular – said the vice-president of the Regional Council of Liguria Armando Sanna. “Pertini was born and lived in Liguria, in Genoa he worked as a journalist. The car that belonged to him, like that of many Italians of the time, perfectly embodies the popular and democratic spirit that has always animated his political commitment. The Regional Council dedicated the Chamber to him because Pertini will always be at home here, as will his ideals”.
“The initiative – said the President of the States General of Italian Heritage Ivan Drogo Inglese – also represents a tribute to the Fiat 500, an iconic symbol of Italian ingenuity and more generally to the world of historic motoring which in Liguria has thousands of enthusiasts and collectors ”.
