Suviana massacre, bodies of two missing people found: five confirmed victims
The bodies of two of the four missing in the Suviana massacre have been found: the number of confirmed victims of the explosion that occurred inside the hydroelectric power plant of the Suviana dam, on the Bolognese Apennines, has thus risen to five.
The bodies were identified by divers on the ninth floor underground, but have not yet been brought to the surface, which is why the details of the two victims are not yet known, who are in addition to the three confirmed in recent days.
The divers highlighted the difficulties in the search activities. “The problem is water pollution. Mainly the night was dedicated to cleaning up a layer of water that invaded the rooms where the explosion occurred: in particular, the oils and hydrocarbons present on the surface were almost completely removed”.
Interviewed by The Republic, the commander of the divers of the Guardia di Finanza of Rimini, Giovanni Cirmi, declared: “I saw walls one and 80 meters thick literally broken down as if they were plasterboard. The explosion must have been terrible.”
“The image of those large walls knocked down by pieces of turbines flying out in every direction with unprecedented violence will not be easy to forget,” he added.
The diver added that yesterday he and his colleagues “were only able to inspect the level at minus 8, we are talking about 40 meters deep. The other two lower floors were already completely flooded and the water was starting to rise. We continued on as far as possible, but at that point we were forced to go back up, it was too dangerous to continue. There were no minimum safety conditions to continue operating.”
