The police announced that the second girl injured in the Viertola school shooting will receive home treatment on Thursday.
Both the injured girls are still hospitalized. The condition of the other injured is still critical, but one of the girls is getting home care today.
“Such information came from the doctors today that the treatment will continue at home. The condition is therefore significantly improving”, says the head of the investigation Marko Särkkä from the Eastern Uusimaa Police Department.
According to Särkä, however, the situation of the other injured girl is unchanged.
Because the suspected 12-year-old shooter is in the custody of the social authorities, Särkkä does not reveal much about his situation. For example, the police do not say in more detail what his condition is and whether he gets to see his parents regularly.
“I know that he has shown some kind of remorse immediately after the act. Both the suspect and the victims are only children, so it is our duty as authorities to protect their privacy.”
The police by the suspect has said that bullying was one of the motives for the shooting. For the latest information by the bullying would have taken place at the suspect's previous school.
The police are described bullying as a “very subjective and individual experience.”
According to Särkä, bullying is still something that the police are trying to find out “to the root of the problem”.
“Such a motive has been presented, and we are now investigating it with an open mind and by all means. We are also investigating whether there were other possible motives.”
According to Särkä, bullying is a broad concept that can include both mental and physical violence.
“We don't want to stigmatize anyone, but we're trying to get certainty about this.”
The investigation includes, for example, whether there was information about possible bullying at the suspect's previous school, and whether the matter was addressed. The police are also investigating why the suspect has transferred to a new school.
“There could be many reasons for that.”
The suspect started at Viertola school in January. Before that, he went to school in a small town in Uusimaa. The police have not said which town it is in question.
Police announced on Thursday that he would be able to interrogate the suspect again during the weekend. The interrogations are already nearing the end, as most of them have already been completed, the police press release says.
Viertolan a 12-year-old boy died and two girls of the same age were wounded in the shooting that took place at the Jokiranta branch of the school.
The school shooting happened in a classroom where there was one teacher. According to the police, the school staff acted in an exemplary manner.
Police said earlier this week that the gun used by the suspect did not belong to a family member but to a close relative. The gun has been stored in a properly locked gun cabinet, and the suspect has obtained it without permission.
The police arrested the suspect in Helsinki's Siltamäki near the elementary school about an hour after the shooting. On Monday, the police denied that the suspect had threatened other people with a gun during his escape.
Previously, it was widely reported that the suspect had threatened students on their way to school with a gun.
“It seems that there has been no threatening situation and there has been no threat with a weapon,” investigation director Särkkä said on Monday.
