ZAccording to President Bärbel Bas, some stricter rules are being examined to protect the Bundestag from extremists. The SPD politician said on the ARD program “Maischberger” late on Wednesday evening that stricter security checks should be carried out when accessing security-relevant committees. She is also checking whether if members of parliament are denied a house ID card, access to IT should also be cut off because a lot of information can be accessed via the Bundestag's intranet.
In March, Bayerischer Rundfunk, citing internal lists of names from the Bundestag and employee lists from the AfD parliamentary group, reported that the parliamentary group and its MPs had employed more than 100 people from organizations that are classified as right-wing extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The AfD strongly rejected the report.
Bas had already announced that he would endeavor to obtain intelligence information on members of parliament's employees in the future. She also pointed out that the Bundestag carries out checks before issuing a house ID card and looks in police databases for abnormalities that may affect the security of the house.
“Democracy must always be protected. “You have to be vigilant,” the President of Parliament makes clear in the ARD broadcast. However, she has “no sleepless nights” when it comes to Parliament and referred to around 200 police officers in the house who formed their own police district.
