Guatemala has declared state of calamity derived from the intense fires that widely plague the national territory of this Central American nation.
The Guatemalan president, Bernardo Arévalo, has said that this state of calamity will last 30 days in which the flames will be fought with all the available force of the state.
At a press conference, Arévalo declared that “the state of calamity has the purpose ofand face fires in a more agile way; In addition, it seeks to strengthen the brigades that fight fires with material inputs, through the purchase of personal protective equipment and tools; “It also allows us to make a call to receive international aircraft collaboration.”
In total there are records of 44 fires in Guatemala, most of them were caused and have also begun to reduce air quality.
Among the largest fires is that of a garbage dump in the municipality of Villa Nueva, south of the capital of Guatemala, another in the Biotope and another in Volcán de Agua.
The declaration of a state of calamity could make it easier to access emergency funds for urgent combat, as well as to request international help.
It is the first time, in several years, that the authorities take measures like these due to the poor air quality in the country.
