A group of independent developers created a open-source amateur network For Wii U and 3DSto replace the one just closed by Nintendo (April 8). It's called Pretendo and allows you to use the online functions of the games of the two consoles, currently inaccessible through official channels.
Other details
Pretendo can be accessed for free on both consoles. “Pretendo is an open source project with the goal of recreating Nintendo Network for 3DS and Wii U using clean-room reverse engineering,” we can read on the official website. “Since our servers will be free and open source, they will be able to exist even after the inevitable closure of Nintendo Network.”
The goal is to preserve connectivity for users of the two older consoles. The developers are currently working on making full game compatibility.
Currently the three most played games on Pretendo are Splatoon, Mario Kart and Super Mario Maker. It should be noted that to access the software you must first hack the 3DS, a practice that is not recommended if you don't know how to proceed and don't want to risk irreparable failures. On Wii U, however, Pretendo can be accessed directly without modifications, thanks to the use of an SSL exploit.
Of course it is fair to specify that Pretendo is not supported in any way by Nintendo, so please refer to official site for problems and clarifications, in case you want to try it.
