According to a Bloomberg report, Square Enix has removed it Yu Miyake from the lead position producer of the Dragon Quest series due to internal delays for the next chapter of the main series, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate.
Miyake, who has also served on the company's board of directors since 1992 and has long overseen the franchise, has been reassigned as head of Square Enix's mobile division, according to the outlet's sources. He seems to be the most popular candidate to take over from Miyake Yosuke Saito, the producer of the NieR series.
This would be part of a broader plan to reshuffle roles at the top of the Japanese company with the aim of focusing more resources on triple-A games developed internally and depending less on external resources.
What we know about Dragon Quest 12
Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate was announced in 2021 on the occasion of the thirty-fifth anniversary of the series. About seven years have passed since the previous chapter, Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age, released in 2017.
For now we have only seen the official logo of the new game and from the words of the creator of the series Yuji Horii we know that it will bring various changes to the turn-based combat system of the series, as well as darker tones compared to previous chapters. It will probably be the last game that can boast a character design created by Akira Toriyama, the author of Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, who passed away at the beginning of March.
