'Yana-Wara', the most recent gem of Peruvian cinema, can finally be seen on the big screen. The latest work of the Puno filmmaker Oscar Catacorawho co-directed the film with his uncle, Tito Catacora, will make its grand premiere in different theaters in our country, eight months after its official launch. It is worth remembering that this film was screened for the first time at the 27th edition of the PUCP Lima Film Festival, where it received very good reviews from attendees.
This long-awaited arrival in national theaters takes place after its spectacular broadcast on the island of Uros, in Puno, where a ceremonial ritual identified with the Aymara culture was carried out. The event featured offerings, dances, music and the presence of the entire cast and the character of Anchancho, which was recreated in giant size in the middle of Lake Titicaca.

'Yana-Wara'a film recognized as one of the best works of Peruvian cinema in recent years, premieres in Peru on Thursday, April 4, 2024. 'Yana-Wara' It is based on an original script by Oscar Catacora, who directed the film until his death on November 26, 2021 due to appendicitis. From that moment on, the person in charge of carrying out the project was his uncle, also the filmmaker Tito Catacorawho also carried out the production, photography and editing.
Likewise, this feature film, which has a total duration of 104 minutes —1 hour and 44 minutes—and which is completely in black and white, won the award for best Peruvian film at the 27th PUCP Lima Film Festival. Likewise, he was recognized in the same category in the APRECI Awards for Peruvian Cinema 2023. At this event it also won awards for best direction and best script.

What is 'Yana-Wara' about?
At the center of the story is Yana-Wara, a 13-year-old orphan girl, whose destiny is marked by fate. Her life takes place in the midst of solitude, surrounded by imposing nature, under the care of her grandfather, Don Evaristo, until an unexpected event occurs when she goes to the community's rural school.
Yana-Wara begins to be harassed by her teacher and is also tormented by Anchancho, an evil spirit that lives in the darkness of the caves and that, from the underworld, unleashes tragic events.
In search of saving his granddaughter, Don Evaristo turns to shamans and yatiris for healing, but seeing that nothing can prevent the girl's terrible suffering, he makes an extreme decision that transcends the entire community. The old man will have to face communal justice, submit to trial and explain the reasons for his actions.
'Yana-Wara' It addresses issues such as gender violence, machismo, discrimination, the condition of women in the high Andean areas and the intercultural justice in force in many places in the country. The film leads to reflection, to rethink and to look at our reality with different eyes.
