The April astronomical calendar marks a total solar eclipse this Monday, April 8. The Moon will block the Sun producing a false night for about four minutes. Millions of people will be able to appreciate it in all its fullness in some areas of the United States, Mexico and Canada. It is a sight that much of North America will not see again for another 20 years. Total solar eclipses, in addition to being exciting to watch, offer scientists the opportunity to study Earth's atmosphere and the sun's corona under unusual conditions. Organizations such as NASA are also preparing professional and citizen science projects to make the most of this golden opportunity.
