Movimento published an illustration showing Roman soldiers saying that “a good criminal is a dead criminal”; some netizens saw a social criticism
Politicians and influencers more aligned to the right criticized on social media a publication made by MTST (Homeless Workers Movement) on Friday (29.mar.2024) in which Jesus Christ appears being crucified with the phrase “A nice bandit is a dead bandit”.
By some on the left, the post was seen as a social criticism reminiscent of recent police actions and phrases often said by names of opposing ideology.
The senator and president of the PP, Ciro Nogueira (PI), he wrote: “Using the image of Jesus, in the middle of Easter, to compare him to a 'criminal' and, thus, disapprove of the violent approaches that we all condemn, is not only a lack of respect”.
In the publication, Ciro Nogueira also criticized the Psol deputy and pre-candidate for Mayor of São Paulo, Guilherme Bouloswho is affiliated with the movement and was once one of the leaders of the MTST.
“Boulos proves that he is unbalanced and São Paulo cannot fall into the hands of an unbalanced person who does not even respect Jesus or the faith of others”he declared.
After the negative repercussion, the workers movement stated that there was “lack of interpretation of the image and message” of the post. “To help, we recommend reading Luke, chapter 23”, he wrote the organization in your X profile.
Other names opposing the Lula government also published criticisms:
- Fabio Wajngartenadvisor and former Secretary of Communication in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL):
Several internet users also criticized the publication. A man, with the user @Jao_RJ90, declared that publication is a “disrespect the faith of others”. Another asked: “What crimes did Jesus actually commit? Oh yeah, none”.
The publication of the MTST takes place 5 days after the São Paulo Military Police inform that the number of deaths in Operation Verão, in Baixada Santista, reached 51. This action was harshly criticized by names on the left.
OPERATION SHIELD X SUMMER
In July 2023, São Paulo launched operation Escudo as a response to the death of Patrick Bastos Reis, a military police officer from Rota (Rondas Ostensivas Tobias de Aguiar), while patrolling in Guarujá (SP). The action left at least 28 dead in about 40 days.
In December 2023, the local government announced a new police action, which works as an extension of the previous operation. Named Operation Verão, the initiative allocated a reinforcement of 3,108 military police officers in 16 municipalities on the south and north coast of the state.
After the death of soldier Samuel Wesley Cosmo, also a Rota PM, on February 2, the São Paulo government launched a new phase to intensify the police presence on the streets. The 3rd phase of the operation began shortly afterwards, on February 7, also caused by the death of a PM, Corporal José Silveira dos Santos.
At the time, the state government installed a Public Security office in Santos and reinforced patrolling in cities on the coast of São Paulo.
The number of deaths, both in Operation Escudo and in Verão, provoked a series of movements by human rights organizations. On February 16, the NGO Conectas Human Rights and the Vladimir Herzog Institute sent an appeal to the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) and the UN (United Nations) for the end of the operation and the mandatory use of body cameras.
TARCÍSIO “NOT EVEN THERE”
Faced with the accusations, the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), said on March 8 that he was “do not care” to the negative repercussions of the measures adopted in the State. He stated that he has “very peaceful” about what has been done in the area of security and which has received praise from businesspeople and judges.
