Found and auctioned a copy of Mystery House, the first graphic adventure in history, written by Roberta Williams and programmed by Ken Williams, the story of the couple who founded Sierra On-Line. The offers I'm already sky high.
This is a 44 year old horror game, released on Apple II, in a still pioneering era in which many games were packaged at home and carried by hand to the shops. Chris Kohler of Digital Eclipse he noted on Bluesky that the found copy was probably packaged in the Williams' kitchen, with the plastic bag purchased at a local super market.
Mystery House will then be republished with more professional packaging, but the first, historic copies, were contained inside those very fragile envelopes. 10,000 were made and one of these can now be purchased on Ebay, to the delight of collectors.
Lots of interest
At the time of writing this news, the price on Ebay of the rediscovered copy of Mystery House went for $4,150. Considering there are still more than four days to bid, it is likely to rise further.
The seller admitted he had the copy in storage for decades: “I don't think I touched it for forty years before I found it this week in a box of old software.” Be that as it may, he also assured that the game is in good condition and working order.
