“MCXtrema is the flagship of Maserati Corse's racing production, much more than a simple car conceived and designed for the track. Around this racing car synonymous with impeccable power, exclusivity at the highest levels and unprecedented quality, we have built an entire universe, dedicated to 62 lovers of the Brand and of the most attractive drive, the one between the curbs. MCXtrema is a sensational car that dares and is not afraid to do so, created with the aim of giving shape and power to an unparalleled desire. A true racing marvel”: this is how Giovanni Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse, reveals the strategy behind the Trident company's return to the track.
A “return” to the past, to when customers bought Maseratis to race, and a refined way to underline how the racing world – in the round – is part of the DNA of the Modena brand. On the other hand, Maserati's commitment to Formula E should not be forgotten, demonstrating the fact that “racing” today means a bit of everything, even competitions that were unimaginable until recently.
The heart of this project is a car whose name says it all: “MCXtrema”, a 740 HP supercar derived from the MC20 and which has returned to unleash itself in its natural environment, the track, for a series of tests that will see it involved until the end of April, in view of the delivery of the first example, expected by the end of summer 2024.
The car cannot go on the road, it is approved only for use on the track and produced in 62 units, precisely because when it comes to creating a “car without compromises” you have to be apodictic, go straight to the goal. In this case, propose something that is the maximum expression of Maserati DNA and the extraordinary performance that characterizes the entire production of the 100% Italian brand,
So everything has a special flavour. Also the debut because in February in the first official outing, at the Autodromo Varano de' Melegari (Parma), the MCXtrema was taken to the track by Andrea Bertolini, Maserati chief test driver and one of the most successful drivers in the GT categories with four world titles aboard the glorious MC12, who followed its development from the first stages on the dynamic simulator.
And by development, we are talking about something very different from the usual because the MCXtrema has benefited from the most advanced equipment in the world: a fundamental contribution comes from the Virtual Analysis team, with the cutting-edge technology of the Maserati dynamic simulator, and from the Powertrain Calibration, responsible for managing the enormous power developed by the Nettuno engine.
The virtual work carried out with MCXtrema – approximately 200 hours of driving on the Maserati dynamic simulator and 1000 hours of virtual analysis for various types of simulations – and the comparison with the feedback on the track, combined with the previous four years of development dedicated to MC20 and the subsequent checks on the reliability of the upgraded engine have made it possible to create a unique car that customers will be able to use for special events, track driving sessions with professional drivers, advanced sports driving training programs and more on selected tracks around the world .
