Today, motorists who commit certain traffic offenses in a country other than their own and therefore drive a vehicle with a foreign license plate remain unpunished. But the situation could soon change: it seems that the Council and the European Parliament have reached an agreement first understanding to combat this phenomenon and therefore increase safety on the roads of all the countries that are part of the EU.
Fines without borders
A note from the European Parliament reported by Ansa reads: “To prevent reckless driving abroad, the rules have been updated they will expand the list of traffic violations committed by non-resident drivers which trigger cross-border assistance and which may result in a fine for dangerous drivers”. In practice, if until now certain driving offenses did not provide for any sanctions for those who committed them (in light of the above conditions relating to foreign residence), soon this will no longer be the case.
New punishable infringements
In addition to speeding, driving while intoxicated or failing to stop at a red light, among the new offenses that will be included in the list of punishability there are parking in prohibited areas, dangerous overtaking, failure to help and entering restricted traffic areas. The objective, as mentioned, is to increase safety on European roads, considering that approximately 40% of infringements so-called transnationals today go unpunished. Now the ball is back to the two EU institutions mentioned above, which will have to proceed with formal approval.
