The MacBook Pro line with M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max processors was launched last October but Apple isn't willing to pull out all the stops. In fact, as often happens, the Cupertino giant has already given the go-ahead, at least formally, to the development of the M4 chips which will be equipped on the next generation MacBook Pro.
The news emerged during a Q&A focused on Apple Car, prompted by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.
When will M4 arrive?
During the event, which took place the day after the new MacBook Air M3, Gurman's questions touched on various topics, not all of which were strictly related to Apple Car. One of these introduced the topic of what's next MacBook Pro M4: the bitten apple company did not go too far and limited itself to reporting that “formal development of the new devices has just begun“.
By summarizing Apple's releases, we can get an idea of the arrival of the next MacBook Pro: M1 was launched in November 2020, M2 in June 2022 and M3 in October 2023. Apple therefore takes around 18 months between the throwing of one chip and another. If these timings were to be confirmed again, it would mean that the M4 SoC should arrive within the first half of 2025.
The rumors also want the use of TMSC's N3E production process for the next M4. The same type of technology should also be used for the A18 Pro chips of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Before we know more, we will still have to wait for the launch of M3 Ultra scheduled for mid-this year.
