The Lebanese hope for a positive development as a result of the ongoing efforts of the International Five-Year Committee to resolve the frozen political situation after the inability to complete the presidential election and form a government that works to develop an urgent plan to save the economy from collapse.
Last Saturday, the ambassadors of the International Arab Five-Year Committee stressed the necessity of electing a new president for Lebanon as soon as possible, given the circumstances the region is going through, which necessitates achieving this goal, by bringing the positions of the parties closer together, without interference or disputes over the right and responsibility of Parliament to put forward the names of presidential candidates.
This came during a meeting between the Prime Minister of the Lebanese caretaker government, Najib Mikati, with the ambassadors of the “Committee”, Saudi Arabia, Walid Bukhari, France, Herve Magro, Qatar, Sheikh Saud Al Thani, Egypt, Alaa Moussa, and the United States of America, Lisa Johnson.
The Prime Minister's Media Office stated in a statement that Mikati praised the efforts of the committee members in working to unify visions in order to elect a new president for Lebanon, praising the five countries' keenness on Lebanon's stability and security.
Political experts and analysts said that there are wide disagreements between Lebanon's parties and there is not yet any agreement that can be built upon to resolve the presidential vacancy crisis that has continued for more than 15 months, and the five-party committee is seeking to limit losses in light of the Gaza war.
Former Lebanese parliamentarian Mustafa Alloush explained in a statement to Al-Ittihad that there is nothing that the parties in Lebanon agree on, because one party is attacking everything that can be agreed upon, and this is what has become known to the five-member committee, which is now seeking to limit losses and try to prevent clashes.
For his part, Lebanese political researcher Mahmoud Fakih said in a statement to Al-Ittihad that the meetings of the Five-Year Committee have not reached any results so far, and its efforts will not reach results as long as there is no variable that moves the Lebanese crisis, pointing out that the war in Gaza may be one of the variables. Which could cast a shadow on the Lebanese scene.
The Five-Year Committee stresses the need to adhere to implementing the constitution according to open and successive electoral sessions, while the Lebanese National Moderation Bloc put forward an initiative to break the presidential deadlock by adhering to the constitutional mechanism, which calls for the implementation of a session in successive sessions, as well as the positions and decision capitals that emphasize every day the necessity of ending the presidential vacancy and electing… A new president of the republic in order to rescue Lebanon from the state of collapse and paralysis in which it lives.
