Red Bull crisis, Jos Verstappen does not go to Saudi Arabia
It's an eventful birthday for Jos Verstappen. The former Dutch driver obsessively took care of every aspect of his son Max's career, in fact laying the foundations for a war machine, and in recent days he seems to want to underline this in the power battle within Red Bull which sees him pitted against the team principal Chris Horner.
The Briton, according to what was leaked from Sakhir, accused Verstappen sr. of having orchestrated the scandal that involved him weeks ago. The two had several discussions in Bahrain, one of which was defined by Times “particularly heated”. They won't have them in Jeddah: not because they have made peace (on the contrary), but because Max's dad won't be going to Saudi Arabia. He will in fact be involved in the Rallye de Hannut.
Certainly – in such a hot climate – everyone being on site would have been convenient, at least in terms of image. An image that Red Bull tried to nurture in Bahrain as much as possible, with the arrival of owner Chalerm Yoovidhya and Geri Halliwell – Horner's wife – to support the Briton in this very delicate moment and to convey a happy family atmosphere. Which in reality is not the case, because in fact there have been arguments (even heated ones) and ignorance.
There would have also been a double, but at this moment the track takes a back seat. Also because in the background a scenario could emerge that is currently distant, but which for Red Bull would be the final act of internal destruction: if those dialogues between Verstappen sr. and Toto Wolff in favor of the chamber were not just provocations, the specter of #1 in Mercedes would take shape.
