Mikael Granlund supports an open SM league.
Finland häikkeikoilijat ry, or Pelaajayhdistys, strongly promotes an open SM league. The association has received support from 17 Finnish NHL players, including Mikael Granlund comment on the matter for the Players' Association in the bulletin.
“We are very concerned about what Finnish hockey looks like now and will look like in the future. We see it as important that the League is opened for sports as quickly as possible. Moving up to the league must be genuinely possible, and not include unreasonable thresholds of several million,” says Granlund.
Granlund himself plays in the NHL, which is a closed series. However, according to him, an open series in Finland would increase the competition.
“The players feel that competition is part of sport. The NHL has a different system, but the competition is still very tough in many ways. Now Liiga and Mestis clearly lack strong competition.”
Granlund also supports the demand of the Players' Association, according to which the association should have its own representatives on the top hockey advisory board, where it is supposed to make decisions about changes to the series systems.
Among the 17 NHL players who support the Players' Association's demand for an open SM league are, among others Sebastian Aho, Miro Heiskanen, Mikko Rantanen, Teuvo Teräväinen, Eeli Tolvanen and Juuse Saros.
Among the signatories are not, among others Patrick Laine, Alexander Barkov and Kaapo Kako.
