The former judge's work in the operation divides the opinion of Brazilians; another 40% say they approve of his performance
A survey by Genial/Quaest released this Sunday (March 3, 2024) shows that Brazilians' opinion on the performance of the former judge and current senator of the Republic Sergio Moro (União Brasil-PR) in Lava Jato is divided: 44% disapprove of his work in the operation, while 40% say they approve.
The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points. Therefore, the 2 groups are technically tied. 12% of those interviewed did not know or did not respond, while another 3% said they neither approved nor disapproved. Here's the complete of the research (PDF – 22 MB).
A approval de Moro is higher among men (46%), people aged 16 to 34 (43%), residents of the South region (49%) and those who earn more than 5 minimum wages (47%). Already yours disapproval is more common among people aged 60 or over (52%), those who earn up to 2 minimum wages (48%) and residents of the Northeast (57%).
Before assuming the position of Minister of Justice during the government of the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Moro was responsible for judging Lava Jato cases in the 13th Federal Court of Curitiba.
A decade since the start of the operation, it is now the target of criticism and Moro was declared partial by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) in the case of the Guarujá triplex, which targeted the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). More recently, evidence of agreements that were used in indictments and convictions under the operation was annulled.
However, the evaluation of Lava Jato itself was more positive. Among those interviewed, almost half (49%) believe that the operation helped to combat corruption and 50% say that it did “more good than bad”.
For 42% of those interviewed in the survey, the operation ended due to the actions of politicians to try to stop it, while 25% say that the end came about because there was “errors and exaggerations” by the investigators and judges involved in the operation.
The survey personally interviewed 2,000 Brazilians aged 16 and over, from February 25th to 27th. The margin of error is 2.2 percentage points and the confidence level is 95%.
