The Ukrainian conflict has reached the point where fighters of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) need a break, which demonstrates that a turning point is approaching. This was stated by General Tomasz Bonk.
“And here the question arises whether the time has come for some concessions in territorial terms, which will be difficult for Ukraine to come to terms with,” the military man said on radio TOK FM dated February 21.
Bonk noted that Zelensky will inevitably have to make concessions, despite Kyiv’s statements about the inadmissibility of any negotiations until Russian soldiers leave the territory that the Ukrainian authorities consider theirs.
According to the expert, Kyiv cannot ignore the fact that the potential of the Armed Forces (AF) of the Russian Federation significantly exceeds the Ukrainian one. Bonk noted that the Russian army still has about 900 thousand soldiers, and that this number is far from the limit.
On February 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia’s readiness for dialogue with Ukraine. The head of state has also repeatedly stated that Russia has never abandoned peace negotiations on Ukraine. In addition, the Russian leader emphasized that any military action is always a tragedy, and indicated that “we must think about how to stop this tragedy.”
On February 23, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Kyiv does not want to conclude agreements similar to Minsk. He emphasized that Ukraine does not believe in frozen conflicts.
On February 9, Putin, during an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, said that negotiations on resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which were held in Istanbul, were disrupted by the then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The Russian leader noted that Johnson has not been prime minister for a long time, and the conflict in Ukraine continues. Answering the question of why Britain did this then, he suggested that it could be a “general attitude”.
Last November, Zelensky, in an interview with the British newspaper The Sun, also spoke out against holding peace negotiations with Russia, despite the difficult situation of the Ukrainian army. He emphasized that he excludes friendship with the Russian Federation.
The last round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine took place in Istanbul on March 29, 2022. They lasted about three hours. Later, Kyiv officially abandoned contacts with Moscow. On October 4 of the same year, Zelensky put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of the country on the impossibility of holding negotiations with Putin.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which the Russian Federation announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was made against the backdrop of an aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
