The president of the United States, Joe Biden, considered that his country “leads the world in returning to the Moon”, after the moon landing of the Odysseus module, after 50 years since a spacecraft landed on the lunar surface.
This Saturday, the American president celebrated the arrival of the Odysseus module to the surface of the Moon, highlighting that this is an “exciting step forward in a new era of space exploration.”
In an official statement, Biden emphasized that this moon landing marks the return of the United States to the lunar scene after more than half a century, being Odysseus the first American spacecraft to achieve this milestone since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
Furthermore, he highlighted that this achievement was possible thanks to the ingenuity, innovation and curiosity of the American people, stating that “the United States leads the world in returning to the Moon.”
The president echoed the words spoken by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, remembering the challenge of achieving difficult goals for the sake of progress and exploration.
Biden affirmed that Kennedy's spirit continues today, underscoring the United States' commitment to overcoming scientific challenges and working together to achieve great goals.
Odysseus module reaches the Moon
Despite some setbacks during the landing process, such as the possible snagging of one of the legs of the Odysseus module shortly after touching down, the company responsible, Intuitive Machines, assured that the ship is in good condition.
Likewise, he said that he is transmitting scientific data adequately, so it is expected that during the weekend photographs can be taken to confirm his exact position.
The Odysseus landing represents a milestone not only in lunar exploration, but also in collaboration between the private sector and NASA.
The region where the module landed is one of thirteen candidates for NASA's next Artemis III manned mission, scheduled for September 2026.
It is believed that this unexplored area could contain deposits of frozen water, making it an important target for future scientific research.
