The CDU/CSU parliamentary group executive opposes the traffic light coalition's wish to include regulations on the Federal Constitutional Court in the Basic Law. Even members of the Union were surprised.
DThe Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag rejects anchoring regulations on the Federal Constitutional Court in the Basic Law. A corresponding decision by the executive committee on Tuesday evening was announced late on Thursday afternoon. The deputy parliamentary group leader Andrea Lindholz (CSU) told the “Rheinische Post” that the Union “currently sees no urgent need for this”.
The board's decision also came as a surprise to many CDU/CSU members. In recent weeks, the Union's right-wing politicians have shown themselves to be fundamentally open to changing the Basic Law, for example to secure the term of office of the constitutional judges and the ban on their re-election. So far, these rules have only been contained in the Federal Constitutional Court Act, which the Bundestag can change with a simple majority. However, two thirds of the members of the Bundestag must agree to a change to the Basic Law. This would allow the court to be better protected from political influence, for example after a change of government.
