2023 is revealed to be a turning point for Peruvian cinema due to local talent that transcends the borders of the capital. In this new edition of the Apreci Awards (awarded by the Peruvian Film Press Association) the film 'The Monroy Case', starring Damián Alcázar, is a combination of tragedy and comedy set in judicial and prison contexts and stands as the maximum contender, accumulating a total of six nominations. This fact not only underlines the quality of the cinema produced in Peru, but also the growing focus on diverse narratives in cultural content.
The advance of regional cinema is becoming noticeable, with productions that move away from the epicenter of Lima to explore authentic stories in native languages, capturing the essence of different parts of the country. This year, 9 of the 15 nominated films come from regions such as Puno, Ucayali and Cuzco, marking a milestone in the history of the awards and underscoring a shift in the national film industry towards greater inclusivity and cultural representation.
