Tesla intends to further expand its production complex at the Gigafactory located on the outskirts of Berlin. Or rather, he meant: yes, because the residents of the city of Gruenheide, in the east of the country, have in fact failed through a referendum the expansion plans of the US brand, which will therefore have to find an alternative way to continue to advance its territorial growth.
The people say no
As reported by the Financial Times, the Tesla's plan involves the felling of 100 hectares of forest to make way for a train station, warehouses and a nursery. Plan which, as mentioned, was rejected by the sender: the large majority of participants in the local referendum, 65% to be precise, he actually voted against this plan.
Non-binding vote, but…
A necessary clarification: it was not a binding vote, rather a consultative referendum. But this does not reduce his at all importance, to such an extent that the city councilors have admitted that they will respect the will of the community. What will happen now? Ansa reports that we don't know yet whether Tesla's expansion plan will still be presented to the City Council for approval or whether it will be withdrawn.
Expansion plan
The decision has not yet been made definitively. What is certain is that for Tesla the outcome of this referendum represents an important setback: remember that the American giant aims to expand the capacity of its German Gigafactory from 500,000 electric vehicles per year to 1 millionand which to do so requires additional logistics space.
