Yet another accident at work this year. In Florence, the collapse of the Esselunga construction site involved 8 people in total.
Work accident this morning, this time in Florence. We are on the construction site in via Giovan Filippo Mariti, Novoli area, right where a new Esselunga supermarket is being built. The place is once intended for the old military bakery. The collapse of a pylon The load-bearing structure of the structure collapsed, causing the death of two workers and injuring three others.
The injured were transported to Careggi hospital, two in critical conditions, code red, and one in less serious conditions, code yellow. Under the rubblethree people are presumed still missing.
The collapse would have occurred in early hours of the morning, shortly after 8.30 and some witnesses reported that they immediately thought of an earthquake. The vibrations and noise alerted all nearby businesses. Then, the tragedy was discovered and the trapped people had to be extracted, fortunately some of them were still alive.
“We heard a very loud bang, like the explosion of a bomb, it was terrible”, these were the words of a witness who was passing near the construction site where the supermarket is being built, in the northern area of Florence.
Initially, some news had reported three victims, but the Tuscany ASL 118 clarified the situation. The Fire Brigade, the Civil Protection, the Police and the USAR (Urban search and rescue) emergency teams of 118 intervened at the site of the accident. These are the rescue teams usually involved in search operations for the missing.
The president of Tuscany, Eugenio Gianistated on X:
Our regional system is intervening for a scaffolding collapse on a construction site in Florence in via Mariti. There are currently eight people involved.
Mayor Dario Nardella expressed his condolences over the tragedy, stating
Pain and dismay over the tragedy at the construction site of the new supermarket We are constantly following the situation. On my behalf and that of the Municipality, I express my condolences for the victims and thank all the rescuers in action. Waiting for updates on the other workers involved.
The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, also commented on the incident:
On behalf of myself and the government, I express my condolences for the victims of the collapse of a beam that occurred on a construction site in Florence. I am following the evolution of the situation with apprehension and I thank those who are participating in the search for the missing and in the rescue operations for the injured. Our deepest condolences to the families affected by this terrible tragedy.
