Phil Spencer spoke to The Verge about future of Xbox, revealing a series of interesting news and details about Xbox, exclusives and Game Pass. However, we must not forget that there is also another piece of Microsoft Gaming's business: the mobile side. Xbox has already confirmed that it plans to create its own mobile store. Where are we at? Here's what Phil Spencer said.
Question: “On the mobile side, you also talked about an Xbox Mobile Store and its potential. It's still coming this year, What is the progress?”
Answer: “There are three aspects to consider. There is a regulatory work to open the possibility of installing another store on Android or iPhone, which has not yet been done. We are actively engaged in the Digital Markets Act and the work that needs to be done to make it possible. Then there's the construction of the shop. We have some experience, having had our own mobile store in the past. So we know how to get this job done.”
“And then there are the discussions with our first-party teams and with our external partners on the business opportunity. There's a lot of excitement about alternative stores on mobile that can offer better economics and are more, let's say, gamer-oriented, because what we're going to make available is an Xbox store. We are able to bring attention to that store because we are now one of the largest mobile publishers with Candy Crush, Call of Duty mobile, Diablo Immortal and Minecraft. We can then use these games to contribute to the engagement of our store, which also benefits third parties.”
The iOS problem
Question: “What do you think of Apple's changes to DMA? E there's room for Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS?”
Answer: “There is no room to monetize Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS. I think Apple's proposal – and I think Sarah Bond's comments were spot on – doesn't go far enough to open up. In fact, you could say they go in the opposite direction in a way, but they certainly don't go far enough to open up competition on the largest gaming platform in the world.”
“We will continue to work with regulators, with Apple and Google, to create a space for alternative stores. I'm a big fan of how Windows works, which has a Microsoft Store on Windows, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. There are alternatives, and I believe alternative ways of purchasing create benefits for consumers and creators. I think the biggest platform for gamers, which is mobile, should have the same.”
There was also talk that Microsoft might be interested in a portable Xbox: Phil Spencer gave an official response.
