Located in Sinaloa, Reform is one of 289 fishing communities of the Sea of Cortez. Located within the Municipality of Angostura in the Santa Maria Bayhouses approximately 6,600 residents and his main economic activity focuses on the fishing. In this fishing fieldthe largest in Mexico, the civil organization IT HAPPENS performs an intervention for the comprehensive community restoration.
The NGO has developed an intervention model based on 3 fundamental axes of action: economic, community and sustainable, with a priority of putting people at the center as an engine of change for prosperity.
Through the reconstruction of the social fabric, starting with processes of forgiveness and reconciliation in people, La Reforma has initiated a simple but effective community development, the active participation of men and women, who have gone from being inhabitants of the largest fishing camp of Mexico to citizens involved in participatory exercises aimed at improving their quality of life, promoting equity, social justice, and environmental and economic restoration of the main population settled in the bay.
With citizen support, which had as its starting point the integration of the network of volunteers, people have become involved in promoting community initiatives to achieve a change in attitude and values in a context marked by deep inequalities and social problems, nothing different from panorama that is experienced in other fishing and agricultural fields in the country. Training and leadership formation have also been fundamental in this restoration process, through workshops in different areas and with training programs, Reformeños have improved their work, emotional and social skills and knowledge.
In this way, SUCEDE is committed to strengthening the human capital of the population to consolidate sustained comprehensive development. With the example and influence of the volunteers, the inhabitants of La Reforma have actively participated in cleaning days on the islands, two community inns, the plastic fishing tournament, forums with specialists to propose improvements to public spaces and dialogues with organizations international organizations such as Oceana and WWF on what the fishing sector currently needs to return to the prosperity and future they want for the community.
This wave of change also reached the children of La Reforma, through Mi Verano SUCEDE, the barter cinema, the children's choir, vermicomposting workshops, community gardens, entrepreneurship workshops in schools and addiction prevention campaigns, the girls and the children have taken action by getting involved in what they want for their community: they recycle, plant trees, clean the beach and motivate their families to also participate.
This community empowerment has triggered more and more families to adopt sustainable practices in their primary activities and are aware that the conservation of the natural wealth of the bay is what will guarantee their long-term economic sustenance.
With this powerful approach, this year SUCEDE seeks to expand the number of projects to promote the conservation and protection of nature, generate more collective ventures according to the vocations of Santa María Bay, facilitating sustained and sustainable growth with equity and socially responsible.
