The issue appears to date back several months but was only made public recently: it seems that FromSoftware is now thesole owner of the IP of Elden Ringfollowing a move from Bandai Namco to the development team.
This step seems to have materialized as early as April 2023, but it emerged publicly only recently, through some documents found in the American patent office database which attest to FromSoftware's absolute ownership of the title in question.
What exactly this changes, in terms of development, is not obvious: in any case there is certainly one greater freedom of action by FromSoftware on the use of the franchise, in case there were to be a sequel or in any case some type of use of the title in question.
FromSoftware will have freer hands on Elden Ring
It must also be said that FromSoftware appeared as the holder of the Elden Ring title previously too, but on different markets: through a somewhat cumbersome organisation, these were in fact registered under different names between the team and Bandai Namcobut the Japanese publisher was still in possession of the IP at least in North America.
This means that FromSoftware will have freer hands when it comes to possibly developing a following of Elden Ring in the future, although obviously this is still an unlikely idea, given that the team has still been working on the announced Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for years now and we are all waiting for information about it.
