The men's national water polo team is in the final at the World Water Polo Championships in Doha. Settebello beat Spain, the reigning European champions, 8-6. The rival for the title will emerge from the match between France and Croatia.
Settebello's performance was excellent from both a technical and tactical point of view. The Azzurri, after a difficult first half which ended at 1-1, made the difference in the second set at the end of which they enjoyed a two-goal lead. Sandro Campagna's boys then extended the lead in the third period (6-3) and then resisted the return of the Spaniards in the fourth and final period. Excellent performance from goalkeeper Marco Del Lungo. Double for captain Francesco Di Fulvio, Andrea Fondelli and Francesco Condemi, and goals for Lorenzo Bruni and Alessandro Velotto.
The Doha World Cup final will take place on Saturday 17th at 3.30 pm Italian time. This is the third final in the last four editions for the Settebello. In 2019 the last world championship gold was in Gwangju while the last medal was silver in Budapest 2022 in the final won by Spain. For Italian men's water polo, Doha 2024 will be the seventh final since 1986, i.e. since the world championship event takes place with the formula of finals for individual placings. In recent days, by beating the United States in the round of 16, the Azzurri had secured their pass to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
