The Colombian Daniel Felipe Martínez (Bora-Hangrohe) achieved a spectacular victory in the Vuelta a Algarve, in Portugal. He won the second stage, between Lagoia and Foia, over 171.9 kilometers, finishing in a first category mountain prize.
Martínez is the new leader of the race, after beating another of the big favorites, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel, in the finishing of the fraction. It should be remembered that the rider born in Soacha is the current champion of the event.
“We knew we had quite strong rivals, we did an exceptional job and in the end, in the sprint, I had good legs,” Martínez said. “It was an important day, we had a good time and we will see what happens in the coming days,” she added.
Martínez crowned a great job by Bora, in which fellow Colombian Sergio Higuita was instrumental in leading them to victory. Higuita entered fourth in the fraction, six seconds behind.
2024 started very well for Martínez, who has just won the gold medal in the time trial of the national cycling championships.
In the general classification, Martínez surpasses Remco by four seconds and the current champion of the Vuelta a España, the American Sepp Kuss (Visma), by 12. Higuita is fourth at 16 seconds.
This Friday the third stage of the Tour of the Algarve will be run, between Vila Real de Santo António and Tavira, over 192.2 km, on a route with two third category mountain prizes.
