This week a preliminary report was released by the Federal Economic Competition Commission, also known as Cofece, of Mexico, which attempts to combat the dominance that amazon and Mercado Libre have over the marketplace in our country. After several days of silence, These two companies have finally issued a response.
Through a statement shared with Expansión, an Amazon representative spoke about Cofece's preliminary report, and noted that They will continue to work together with the government of Mexico to ensure the user the best possible experience. This is what was said about it:
“We have collaborated closely with Cofece and will continue to do so. The pro-competitive practices we operate in Mexico promote competition and innovation in the retail industry, and have resulted in greater selection, better prices and faster delivery for customers, as well as greater opportunities for sellers throughout the country.”
For its part, Mercado Libre also issued a statement where it indicated be analyzing this opinion, and will adhere to the final result. This was what was commented:
“It is important to highlight that a process will begin based on the published opinion and once the file is ready, the Cofece plenary session will decide and issue a resolution. Because it is not an investigation of monopolistic practices, the resolution would not imply economic sanctions.”
In its preliminary ruling, Cofece has indicated that Amazon and Mercado Libre have control of the Mexican marketplace thanks to their packages that include streaming services, such as Prime Video and Star+, as well as a series of logistics aids for its sellers. These two elements attract both buyers and sellers, creating unfavorable competition with companies such as Walmart, Liverpool and Coppel.
At the moment this is only a preliminary ruling, and there is still no final result that directly affects the way in which Amazon and Mercado Libre work, although this could change at any time instant. On related topics, you can learn more about the changes to streaming platforms here. Likewise, this is how the dominance of these two companies will be stopped.
Editor's Note:
Although everything that Cofece has mentioned makes sense, there is one point that has not been liked by many, since, if the changes mentioned by the organization are applied, services such as Prime Video would no longer be available along with the Amazon subscription. Prime, something that is not liked by consumers.
