This Wednesday, the 14th, the Brazilian Army dismissed two soldiers who were targets, last week, of Operation Tempus Veritatis of the Federal Police (PF), which investigates a criminal organization that planned a coup d'état after the 2022 elections.
The exemptions were signed by the Army commander, General Tomás Paiva, last Thursday, the 8th, on the day the PF operation was launched. However, the publications were made in Official Diary of the Union (DOU) this Wednesday.
The exonerated soldiers are Lieutenant Colonel Guilherme Marques de Almeida, who left command of the 1st Psychological Operations Battalion in Goiânia, and Lieutenant Colonel Hélio Ferreira Lima, who was removed from the post of commander of the 3rd Special Forces Company in Manaus .
Guilherme Marques de Almeida was appointed by Tomás Paiva to lead the Goiânia battalion on the 19th. In November, he received a gross salary of R$27,417.60.
Hélio Ferreira Lima has been in charge of the company since June last year. According to the Transparency Portal, his gross remuneration in November was R$27,027.
Military personnel are investigated for encouraging demonstrations in front of barracks
Last Thursday, the PF carried out 33 search and seizure warrants against high-ranking military personnel, ministers and former advisors to former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Bolsonaro is suspected of having been the “mastermind” of a coup d'état after losing the presidential elections to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
The order to launch the operation came from the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, who showed in a report that the targets of the operation were planning to carry out a coup d'état in an organization formed by at least six different types of action. The fronts' tasks had three objectives: to discredit the electoral process, plan and execute the coup d'état and abolish the Democratic Rule of Law, to maintain their group's permanence in power.
Guilherme and Hélio are mentioned in the PF report as members of a “nuclear of disinformation and attacks on the electoral system”. The organization of the nucleus would serve to “encourage followers to remain in front of barracks and installations of the Armed Forces, with the aim of creating an environment conducive to the coup d’état”.
Hélio is also identified as a member of a group that met to maintain extremist demonstrations in front of the barracks after the 2022 elections.
On the day of the operation, the two soldiers were searched and seized, had their public duties suspended and were forced to hand over their passports to the PF.
