The United States currently faces a “serious threat” to national security, which is related to Russia, according to the American broadcaster CNN.
Authorities did not clarify what type of threat it was. However, there is great expectation in Washington after the chairman of the Intelligence Committee of the US House of Representatives, Republican Mike Turner, published this Wednesday (14) an enigmatic message about a threat to the country.
In a letter sent Wednesday to his Republican colleagues, Turner said his committee identified “an urgent issue regarding a destabilizing foreign political capability” that all members of Congress should be aware of.
In the letter, he explained that the commission voted on Tuesday (13) to declassify information about this threat and that now all members of the Chamber could have access to information on this subject.
Turner also called on US President Joe Biden to declassify “all information related to this threat”, of which he did not provide details.
According to CNNciting two sources familiar with the matter, the threat is linked to Russia, although no further information is provided on the matter.
The White House declined to provide further information on the topic.
During a news conference, White House National Security Council adviser Jake Sullivan said that this week he spoke personally with leaders from both parties involved in security issues, including Turner, and that he was “a little surprised” by the fact that the legislator made these comments this Wednesday.
Sullivan is scheduled to meet this Thursday with what is known as the “Group of Eight,” which includes the leaders of each of the two parties in the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as the presidents and members opposition from both the Senate and House intelligence committees.
