Apple is working on several foldable iPhone prototypes, but is being held back by durability and price control issues in developing the technology.
In recent years, Apple has paid a lot of attention to developing a Foldable iPhone. In fact, the first news regarding Tim Cook, who encourages his engineers to work on this type of device, dates back to 2018.
Since then, studies have been conducted, designs elaborated and patents issued, but so far there has been no tangible result. The continued delays can be attributed in part to the numerous design issues the company encountered during development.
According to the latest information, in fact, the Cupertino company is currently testing several prototypeswith the hope that one of them will pass the quality control phase and mass production can begin.
More than an idea
The two main obstacles preventing Apple from launching a foldable iPhone, as reported by The Information, are the strength of the zipper design and the screen fold when the device is fully open.
Currently, two or more prototypes are in development, which The Information claims will become iPhones, not iPads.
According to patent rumors, Apple's first foldable could boast a 8-inch hybrid OLED displaya next-generation hinge, a USB-C port and MagSafe support.
The launch of the product would not be scheduled either for the current year or for 2025, still demonstrating of uncertainties despite the progress in the creation of prototypes.
Previously, rumors suggested that Samsung and LG were in contact with Apple to provide samples of foldable displays.
Rumors about iPad
In recent days, speculation has been circulating that the 8-inch screen could belong to a possible Foldable iPadbut at the moment there is no confirmation on this matter.
Apple has explored the possibility of creating iPads with this technology in the past, but it seems that such devices will only be launched after the introduction of the OLED iPad Pro models due out this year.
The company must also take into account the pricing questionas there is a possibility that consumers may not be willing to invest in a high-cost foldable iPhone, opting instead for a more traditional and affordable version.
It is hoped that Apple will be able to resolve the design problems as soon as possible and keep the price within an acceptable range, abandoning the uncertainty in adopting the same trend followed by Android devices.
However, if Apple is unhappy with the quality of its foldable iPhone or if other problems persist, it may eventually decide to stop development of the device entirely.
