Jennifer Crumbley, whose son killed four schoolmates and injured six others as well as a teacher during a shooting at Oxford High School on November 30, 2021, was convicted of manslaughter. The sentence was handed down by a jury made up of 12 judges who deliberated for over ten hours.
Crumbley, 45, had pleaded not guilty to charges related to the mass shooting. According to the prosecution, the woman is responsible for the deaths because she was ''grossly negligent'' in giving a gun to her son Ethan, who was 15 years old at the time, and failing to provide him with adequate mental health treatment despite the warning signs.
It is the first time a parent has been tried for manslaughter in connection with a shooting led by their child. The case could set a legal precedent in holding parents criminally responsible for the actions of their children. Crumbley's husband, James, will go on trial next month on the same manslaughter charges.
