The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority succeeded in implementing a project to detect water leaks via satellite.
The Director of the Authority’s Water Department, Engineer Faisal Al Sarkal, explained that the technology of detecting leaks through the satellite was used to survey the water network with a length of 5,000 km. Leaks from pipes in the transmission and distribution lines were identified, and a survey of 400 km of the network was completed using modern devices to determine the locations of unauthorized leaks. He pointed out that the project team was able, during the past year 2023, to detect and address 542 leaks in transmission and distribution lines of various sizes, which led to the saving of 788 million gallons, which is equivalent to an amount of 27 million UAE dirhams.
He stressed that the Authority works to monitor and maintain water networks on an ongoing basis and in accordance with the best international standards, and aims and aspires to further save and reduce losses in existing water networks, out of concern for water.
