Álvaro Montero arrived at Millonarios in 2022 and since his hiring the team has had a glorious time. He has already lifted three trophies with the blue and white shield on his chest: the Colombia Cup in his first year, the League in 2023-I and the Super League a couple of weeks ago.
However, the Albiazul goalkeeper had a night to forget against Deportes Tolima, his former team, in which he was also champion in 2018. Montero was involved in the rival's two goals, although it should be noted that the responsibility was shared.
At 1-0, scored by Álex Castro at 28 minutesMontero launched himself badly and could not retain a shot which came out after a ball that Daniel Giraldo lost when he tried to go out playing through the center.
Another mistake, and a very serious one, occurred ten minutes later, also shared between Montero and another of his teammates, defender Andrés Llinás, who, under pressure from the Tolima forwards, made a return that fell very short. The goalkeeper tried to go out to reject, but he hit the air and Yeison Guzmán took advantage of the error to score the second goal for the vinotinto y oro.
The two failures cost Millonarios dearly, which went undefeated in the League and went three games without winning. They came from two consecutive draws, against Bucaramanga as a visitor (0-0) and against Alianza in El Campín (1-1). It is not the best start to the campaign of the era of coach Alberto Gamero (see graph).
Millionaires, to work to overcome the downturn
To the concerns that Gamero has due to the constant injuries that have decimated the squad, this sudden drop in level of several of the references is now added, especially that of Montero. However, the Samario coach, who turned 60 this Saturday, took the issue very calmly.
“We made mistakes in two starts, a bad return from our center back, a loss from our midfielder in the middle of the field and we knew that Tolima was dangerous in that,” declared Gamero, without referring directly to the goalkeeper, but acknowledging the two costly errors.
The press conference after the defeat against Tolima was attended by Costa Rican Juan Pablo Vargas, who reappeared after recovering from his muscle injury and who saw both goals from the bench: he entered in the second half.
Vargas described what happened as an accident. “I don't think the goals that we concede are due to overconfidence, but rather they are personal technique plays.” and as a player you are exposed to making bad decisions and making mistakes, but I did not see a relaxed team and I do not think that is the reason for the rival's goals,” he said.
Montero was about to leave the club after winning the Super League. Estudiantes de La Plata made an offer for him, but in the end there was no agreement. The goalkeeper has the confidence of Gamero, he is one of the six players who have started in all the games of the year, in addition to Llinás, Giraldo, Delvin Alfonzo, Jorge Arias and Leonardo Castro.
Two classics are coming, against América, on Wednesday, and against Nacional, on Sunday. Montero will have to prove that Ibagué was just a bad night.
