A man was arrested as he left the wake of three alleged members of the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) killed in a shootout with the police, in São Vicente, on the south coast of São Paulo. He was riding a stolen motorcycle with a cloned license plate, according to a complaint filed with the Civil Police. José Wilson do Nascimento Alcântara, 26, known as “Cheque-Mate”, was wearing a t-shirt with a photo of one of the shooting victims who, according to the police, was a member of the criminal faction.
The suspect was approached last Friday, the 26th, on the corner of Frei Gaspar and Guarani streets, in Parque São Vicente. The police monitored the place where the victims' wake was held and the path that the coffin would take to the São Vicente cemetery, looking for possible criminal suspects.
“Cheque-Mate” wore a white t-shirt with a photo of one of the dead, Caio Eduardo Viana Santos, the “Drone”, printed on the back. There was also a phrase praising the deceased, with the words: “Wherever you went you made history and left your legacy. As you said, dying (sic) like a man is the price of war, a war that has no end! Mission complete, Drone. Rest in peace, Caio Eduardo Viana dos Santos”, says the message.
There was also the phrase: “We suffer from cowardice, but we do not commit it (sic). #Paznasfavelas.” The content of the t-shirt caught the attention of the police and “Checkmate” was approached.
Searching the motorcycle's license plate, the police officers saw that the vehicle was registered in Orlândia, a city in the north of São Paulo, 430 kilometers from the coast. Suspicious, the team contacted the Orlândia PM, who went to the motorcycle owner's residence, located through registration with the state traffic department. The police officers found that the motorcycle, a Honda Biz 125, was parked in front of the house at the time.
According to the police, the cloned motorcycle in São Vicente had been stolen on January 21st, however, “Cheque Mate” denied the crime and said that he had purchased the vehicle. The suspect was taken to the 2nd Police District of São Vicente and charged with receiving and tampering with a motor vehicle identification sign. The report requested a copy of the arrest report and is awaiting a return.
Confrontation in favela
The shooting that resulted in the death of “Drone” and two other suspects took place on Wednesday, the 24th, in Dique do Piçarro, one of the largest favelas in São Vicente. In registering the case, the military police said they were carrying out an incursion into the community to check reports of drug trafficking.
Upon the arrival of the police, around ten people fled, but the suspect, armed with a 9 mm Glock pistol, allegedly confronted the police with gunfire. Two other alleged accomplices also allegedly shot at the police vehicles, having been shot in the alleged confrontation. The other two men, aged 24 and 30, also carried weapons – a pistol and a revolver -, according to police.
The three men hit by the shots were taken to the São Vicente Central Emergency Room, but they did not survive the seriousness of their injuries. The police officers presented the Civil Police with portions of drugs and the three pistols used by the suspects, as well as two radio transmitters, four cell phones and two scales. The Military Police weapons used in the action were collected for forensic examination.
According to the Public Security Secretariat, the case was registered as deaths resulting from police intervention, resistance, self-defense and attempted murder. The Civil Police will investigate the circumstances of the deaths.
The report contacted the defense of José Wilson Alcântara, “Cheque-Mate”, and is awaiting a response. Estadão tried and was unable to contact family members of Caio Eduardo Viana dos Santos, the “Drone”.
